Other than being a part of a society or a sports team and all of the other amazing stuff you can do on campus, there’s loads of stuff to do off campus as well. The town of Colchester has loads to do and London is not far away at all!
Especially if you live on campus, it can be quite nice to get out once in a while and explore the local area! Here’s a little snapshot of what the area has to offer, featuring some of my personal favourites…
Recently, Colchester got it’s very own trampoline park; Jump Street. For those of you who don’t know what a trampoline park is, it’s basically an enclosed area full of trampolines. There’s areas to practise your flips and tricks safely, basketball nets to perfect a steller slam dunk, dodgeball courts, and areas where you can jump to your hearts content! They also offer fitness classes, if you fancy a workout session with a difference! It’s the perfect place to hang out with your mates and let off a bit of steam! I went to Jump Street last year and it was brilliant fun! I can’t wait to find an excuse to go back again soon!
The capital is only an hour away by train, meaning that there are loads of opportunities on your doorstep. From taking a look at one of the many free museums, to seeing the city’s many sights, there’s loads of stuff to! Being a drama student, when I’m in London I love going to the theatre and in particular, the Royal Court Theatre and the National Theatre. These theatres not only offer generous student discounts, but also generally produce really good and interesting plays. However, if West End musicals are more your thing, then it’s worth checking out the tkts box office in Leicester Square, when you first arrive in London. There, you’ll find day tickets available for prices which are often heavily discounted!

Colchester zoo is one of the top zoos in the country for animal conservation and also boasts a huge range of animals. Whether it’s the penguins or the giraffes that take your fancy, the zoo is well worth a visit! There’s enough there to make a whole day of it with over 270 animal species on show and displays going on throughout the day. If you love animals, then this will be right up your street!
Just down the road from the Colchester campus is the peaceful town of Wivenhoe. Sitting on the River Colne, the town is perfect for a Sunday roast in one of the many pubs. In particular, the Wivenhoe trail, which runs along the River Colne from the Colchester campus to Wivenhoe, makes for a wonderful walk, especially in the summer months!
So, as you can see, life is pretty sweet for us here! Why not try some of this yourself?!
